What is the Digital Nomad Visa

The Digital Nomad Visa, introduced on the 30th of October 2022, opens up a world of opportunities for foreigners seeking to live and work legally in Portugal. This special visa enables you to work remotely, either as an employee with a work contract or as an independent professional, serving clients or companies located outside Portugal. Available Types of DNV

This visa can be granted as a Temporary Stay Visa (period of stay is under one year) or as a Residence Visa (period of stay over one year).

The Temporary Stay Digital Nomad Visa

will allow you to stay in the country for 12 months.

The Long Term Digital Nomad Visa

is valid for 4 months and then transformed into a temporary residence permit valid for 2 years, renewable for 3 years and then turned into either a permanente residence card or passport (as long as you speak English).

Requirements

  • Passport valid for 3 months after the duration of the stay;
  • Two passport photos;
  • Criminal record certificate from the country of origin (for foreigners) and from the country where the applicant lives for more than a year;
  • Travel medical insurance
  • Request for criminal record enquiry by the Immigration and Border Services (SEF);
  • Proof of accommodation (for at least, the 6 first months)
SPECIFIC DOCUMENTATION:
    • Proof of average monthly income earned in the exercise of subordinate or independent professional activity in the last three months of a minimum value equivalent to four guaranteed minimum monthly remunerations (for 2023 – RMMG is 760 €, hence – 3040 €, net revenues – check calculator bellow).
    • A certified/official document attesting the applicant fiscal residence

For subordinate link, one of the following documents:

    • Work contract or Promise of work contract
    • Statement from the employer proving the employment relationship;

In situations of independent professional activity, one of the following documents:

  • A company contract with contracting entity;
  • A contract for rendering services with contracting;
  • A written proposal for a contract for the rendering of services with contracting entity;
  • A document demonstrating services provided to one or more entities, with contracting entity;
FAMILY Family members of a digital nomad visa applicant, when all the family travels from the same country of origin, can apply for a visa for accompaning the main applicant. For that its necessary?
  • Document proving the family relationship
  • Availability of specific and resources, through presentation of bank accounts, for the requested period of stay (reference of available value per month/minimum – 760 € for adult family member applicant, 380 € for dependent adult and 254 € for dependent children – 2023 values). Ie, this means that in an application of the partner of a digital nomad visa for a period of one year must proove, at least, the availability of 760 € x 12 = 9.120 € in bank accounts. These values needed to be proved apart of the resources for the digital nomad visa applicant.

How ?

The DNV Visa application process begins at the Portuguese consular representation in the applicant’s country of residence. This special visa grants a stay of four months initially, which can later be extended to a 2-year residence card (or 12 months for the short-term version). Within this initial four-month period, the applicant has the opportunity to enter Portugal and apply for the corresponding residence permit. As part of the application, the applicant is required to provide evidence of a rental agreement and a Portuguese bank account
